Wayne Bach has spent twenty-six years in the United States Army. Forced into retirement because of military weight standards, he finds himself at a crossroads, trying to understand what comes next. His friend Luke Verman is building a life of his own in Las Vegas, working in real estate and looking toward a future that neither man can fully predict.

Their friendship becomes the center of a new chapter.

In the desert surrounding Las Vegas, the two men share long conversations, seven-card stud poker games, prospecting trips, and the quiet companionship of two people who have lived enough to know some questions don't have easy answers. Wayne's knowledge of geology draws him into the desert, while Luke's ambitions pull him toward a very different kind of future. Together, they discover that life can change direction long after we think our most important chapters have already been written.
